Josh White, a senior at Renaissance High School in Meridian, has been named a 2018 student ambassador for the National WWII Museum.

Josh is one of just eight high school students chosen for the ambassador program. The student ambassadors have the responsibility to identify local World War II veterans and collect their oral histories. Those histories are then archived in the museum’s collection, according to a press release from the Idaho State Historical Society.

“We’re losing our World War II veterans at a rapid rate, so the stories and memories of the Greatest Generation have never been more valuable,” said the National WWII Museum’s student programs specialist Adam Foreman. “We’re thrilled to have the most dedicated students around the country helping us collect these personal accounts.”

Josh won first place in the documentary category at the Idaho State History Day Competition and won Best Idaho Entry at the National History Day competition in 2017.

Josh traveled to Normandy, France, with his teacher, Janelle Gilson, to learn about WWII and the focus of his research, Idaho veteran Ray O. Coffey. That trip was made through a program called Normandy: Sacrifice for Freedom Albert H. Small Student & Teacher Institute, according to the press release.

At Renaissance, Josh is senior class president, a math tutor, president of the National History Day Club and captain of the Academic Decathlon team.
