Walmart has a new program that allows shoppers to scan merchandise while they shop and skip the checkout line.

Walmart announced the new feature is available at its Meridian store at 4051 E. Fairview Ave. Shoppers can download the company’s Scan & Go app to their smartphones and use it to scan merchandise as they shop in the store. The app will keep a running total of the items in the cart. Shoppers then pay for groceries through the app and show the receipt on their phone to a Walmart associate on the way out, according to a company press release.

Fred Meyer stores also have a similar program that will be available at 26 of its locations this year called Scan, Bag, Go.

The Kroger Co., Fred Meyer’s owner, built the Scan, Bag, Go technology, which allows customers to use a wireless handheld scanner or the Scan, Bag, Go app on their personal device to scan and bag products as they shop. Customers then pay at a self-checkout, though they’ll eventually be able to pay through the app, according to a press release.
