Blue Sky Bagels construction

Blue Sky Bagels was open at 126 E. Idaho Ave. in downtown Meridian for less than a year. The restaurant closed in late July.

After less than a year in business, Blue Sky Bagels has pulled out of its downtown Meridian spot on East Idaho Avenue.

“It wasn’t getting any momentum or any traction, and we weren’t able to make the needle move as much as we’d need,” owner Mark Hansen said.

The location closed in late July.

Hansen owns three other Blue Sky Bagels in Boise and Meridian, including one on the corner of Fairview Avenue and Eagle Road.

Hansen said he took a chance in downtown Meridian because he wanted to be part of the revitalization efforts. But the bagel shop, he added, was “too far ahead of the curve.” The shop struggled to get enough foot traffic on a consistent basis.

“I don’t think bagels can really be the trendsetter,” Hansen said.

Even with the closure, Hansen said he’s glad he took a chance and he hopes to see downtown Meridian succeed.
