Matthew Townsend is currently on an extended vacation from the work force. “I'm spending a month or so reading, learning, writing and campaigning.” He has lived in Meridian about 4 years.
Not married. No children.
HAVE YOU HELD OTHER ELECTED POSITIONS?
I have not. However, I served as a delegate alternate to the Idaho state convention in 2012
HAVE YOU BEEN A CANDIDATE IN ANY OTHER ELECTIONS?
I was a candidate for precinct committeeman in 2012.
HAVE YOU EVER FILED BANKRUPTCY FOR YOURSELF OR FOR YOUR BUSINESS?
I filed bankruptcy in 2011. I was in a very expensive, serious accident and my income was cut by over 50% as a result of my injuries.
HAVE YOU SERVED IN THE MILITARY? IF SO, WHEN, FOR HOW LONG AND FOR WHAT BRANCH?
HAVE YOU BEEN CONVICTED OF ANY MISDEMEANOR OR FELONY CHARGES? (TRAFFIC CITATIONS NOT INCLUDED) IF YES, WHAT WERE THE CONVICTIONS AND THE CIRCUMSTANCES?
Malicious injury to property (M) '04.
ARE YOUR TAXES PAID UP AND CURRENT? IF NOT, PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY?
I did not file for 2012. Personal reasons.
WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS?
Who I am today as a reasoning individual is my current and on-going greatest accomplishment.
PLEASE LIST IN BULLETED FASHION THE FIVE MOST IMPORTANT (IN YOUR OPINION) ORGANIZATIONS OR GROUPS THAT YOU ARE A PART OF.
Not specific groups or organizations, but I and others that I am close to find it important to teach the following topics:
-Self-Defense Rights (including the right to bear arms)
-The Mercenaries In Syria (and other illegal war activity)
-The Federal Reserve being a private bank
PLEASE LIST ANY CONFLICTS OF INTERESTS (OR POTENTIAL PROBLEMS) YOU FACE IF ELECTED.
I believe in, recognize and respect individual rights.
PLEASE NAME THE ORGANIZATIONS OR GROUPS THAT HAVE ENDORSED YOU SO FAR IN THIS ELECTION.
Idahoans for Liberty
The basic platform is as follows:
- U.S. Constitution (every issue, every time);
- Abolishing the Federal Reserve and restoring sound currency;
- State's Rights/Power of the County Sheriff;
- Dramatically shrinking the size of the Federal Government;
- Low taxes;
- Free market capitalism;
- No compromise on the 1st Amendment;
- No compromise on the 2nd Amendment;
- A humble foreign policy and no nation building;
- Securing our borders;
- Personal freedoms and personal responsibility;
- Lawmakers should focus on repealing/decentralizing instead of creating new laws;
WHY YOU INSTEAD OF YOUR OPPONENT(S)?
I believe that the proper role of government is to defend liberty. I understand that the Bill of Rights was written as a restraining order AGAINST the government. I believe as Thomas Paine said- Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one.
IN BULLETED FASHION, PLEASE LIST THE FIRST FIVE THINGS YOU WOULD DO IF ELECTED AND TELL US WHY THEY ARE YOUR TOP PRIORITIES.
-Protecting private property rights. I will never vote or have any other part in removing someone from their home for the "good of the community".
-Finding ways to hold police officers more accountable to the public. Creating a "Police Review Board" could be a start. I have witnessed unnecessary intimidation, have seen local video and know of other situations that were completely unacceptable.
-Doing everything I can to reduce wasteful spending while staying honest with the public concerning expenditures.
-Repealing laws that are pointless or counterproductive.
-Making victimless crimes the last priority to be investigated.
CAMPAIGN WEB SITE:
WHAT SHOULD THE CITY’S ROLE BE IN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT?
The city's role in economic development should be to defend liberty.
WHAT STANDARD SHOULD ELECTED OFFICIALS BE HELD TO?
Elected officials should be required to keep their word to their constituents.
They should be held to the same standard as everyone else.
DO YOU SUPPORT THE DIRECTION THAT THE CITY IS TAKING RIGHT NOW?
Honestly, I love Meridian. Now that Meridian Rd has changed and been re-opened, transportation is quick and easy through downtown. I love the environment and the people throughout Meridian. However, I'm concerned that there is money being spent too carelessly.
PLEASE COMMENT ON THE CITY’S PROPERTY TAXES. ARE THEY TOO HIGH AND WHY? WHERE WOULD YOU CUT THE BUDGET OR HOW WOULD YOU FIND NEW REVENUE?
I have a hard time understanding the case that one must pay to keep what is theirs...
I would never vote to raise property taxes.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO MAKE YOUR CITY MORE ATTRACTIVE TO POTENTIAL EMPLOYERS?
Keeping taxes on businesses as low as possible and encouraging the state to reduce or end the corporate tax would be great incentives for businesses to build in Meridian and elsewhere in Idaho.
WHAT KINDS OF JOBS SHOULD THE CITY ATTRACT AND WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO GET THOSE JOBS?
The city should let the private sector work.
SHOULD THE CITY TAKE STEPS TO ADOPT AN LGBT ORDINANCE SIMILAR THE ONE THE CITY OF BOISE RECENTLY ADOPTED?
I don't believe that telling businesses who they can and can't do business with or employ should be the role of government. This kind of ordinance doesn't change acceptance. I think ordinances like this may be counterproductive and may only cause further discrimination. I believe that every individual is of equal value and should be treated as such. Personally, I have knowingly hired people that would be included in a LGBT ordinance. I just don't feel government can force acceptance.
HOW DID YOU VOTE OR HOW WOULD YOU HAVE VOTED ON THE DECISION TO CONTRACT WITH IDAHO HUMANE SOCIETY AND CLOSE THE MERIDIAN ANIMAL SHELTER?
I didn't vote on this and I'm not familiar with it enough to comment.
WHAT ROLE SHOULD CITY COUNCIL PLAY IN ADVANCING MERIDIAN’S PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS?
None. This is something that should be left to the private sector.
WHAT INFRASTRUCTURE, ZONING OR POLICY CHANGES ARE MOST CRUCIAL TO PREPARE FOR MERIDIAN’S FUTURE POPULATION GROWTH?
There are no specific changes that I am aware of that I feel are needed.
NORTH MERIDIAN HAS SEEN NEW ROADS, BUSINESS DEVELOPMENTS AND PARKS IN RECENT YEARS. HOW WOULD YOU ENSURE THAT THE NEEDS OF SOUTH MERIDIAN RESIDENTS ARE ALSO BEING ADDRESSED?e next box.
I don't feel that this is currently an issue.
PLEASE COMMENT ON THE PROGRESS MERIDIAN HAS MADE IN ITS DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION EFFORTS. WHAT IDEAS WOULD YOU BRING TO THE TABLE?
I live in, love and enjoy downtown Meridian. I haven't lived here for long enough to comment on progress made.
WHAT IS YOUR VIEW ON THE CITY’S PROPOSED $4.5-MILLION PUBLIC SAFETY BUILDING?
At the moment, I'm concerned that it may cost much more and I have yet to be sold on the need. The Meridian City Hall project/dispute was a disaster as it cost 21.4 million after being proposed at 12.2 million. How can we be sure that this public safety building won't end the same way?
